LEGENDARY sports promoter, Barry Hearn was on the winning side in a recent golf tournament at Gosfield Lake.

The 76-year-old was a participant in the much-awaited 34th Essex Boys & Girls Club Golf Classic.

With 20 teams, teeing off at the excellently maintained Lakes course at Gosfield Lake Golf Club, the event provided a healthy challenge and a thrilling contest.

The All Stars team, made up of Hearn himself, along with John Robson, Dan Godding, and Bob Scott clinched victory with a score of 130 points.

The team proudly stepped up to receive their well-deserved John Conteh Trophy, leaving the runner-up team of Tony Wakeling, Phil Nuttgens, and Paul Blows trailing by merely three points.

Hearn made his mark in the individual performance, scoring an impressive 37 Stableford points.

Yet, the most remarkable score was dominated by Mark Dockrill who netted an outstanding 43 points, stealing the limelight for the best non-celebrity score.

In the contest for accuracy, Julian Blake's precision won him the Philip Lait Memorial Trophy.

He aced the closest shot to the pin on the 8th hole, whilst Gary Lewis took the honours on the 17th hole, earning him the Roy Cottrell Memorial Trophy.

In the quest for strength, Wayne Ferris and Dan Godding showed their expertise.

Ferris' massive hit on the first hole won him the June Owen Memorial Trophy, and Godding's strength on the 7th hole led him to lift the Geoff Nisbitt Memorial Trophy.

The tournament turned out to be about more than just golf with celebrities attending not only to catapult some golf balls but also to honour their own roots and to give back to the community.

The funds collected on the day are destined for the Essex Boys & Girls Clubs offering a brighter future for the youth of Essex.

As the organisers stated: "We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future."
