TRIBUTES have been paid to a councillor and Halstead's longest serving mayor following his death.
Leaders at Braintree Council say they are “deeply saddened” by the news of the death of David Hume.
Mr Hume served as a district councillor for the Halstead St Andrew's ward, initially between 2007 and 2011 before returning from 2015 to the present, showing commitment and dedication throughout.
He was also a Halstead town councillor and the longest serving mayor of Halstead, for eight years from 2008 to 2016.
Council leaders said their thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family.
Braintree Council chairman Andrew Hensman and Jackie Pell, leader of the Halstead Residents Association Group, issued a joint statement on behalf of the council.
They said: “We are very saddened to hear of David’s death.
"He was completely dedicated to the local community and loved our district.
“David was a long-standing councillor and was highly respected within Braintree District Council by all members, Halstead Town Council and the local community of Halstead where he was ward member.
“He carried out his role as a councillor with genuine commitment and he was always a passionate advocate for local people in and out of the chamber.
“He will be greatly missed and our thoughts are with his friends and family at this difficult time.”
On Monday, February 20, a two-minute silence will be observed at Braintree Council's meeting and the flag at Causeway House will be lowered to half-mast as a mark of respect.
Mr Hume was a primary school headteacher before he retired, and members of the community have also sent their tributes in following the sad news.
Janet Turner said: "So sad to read this news of David passing he was such a kind man especially to my mum when he did voluntary driving for the council.
"He picked up my Mum from Gosfield and brought her to Eight Ash Green.
"Thinking of his family at this sad time."
Victoria Walker added: "I am totally heart broken to hear this news.
"Halstead has lost an amazing man and we send his family so much love.
"Halstead was changed for the better by him and no one has come close."
