A SPECIAL event for wannabe explorers is coming to Bures in the new year.
The White Dragon Activity Centre is hosting a one-day beginners' map-reading course for teenagers and adults.
A spokesman said: “The event will cover all you need to explore the world around you with a map and compass.
“It is perfect if you're taking up a new outdoor activity, want to reduce your reliance on smart devices, or just want to gain confidence in the great outdoors.
“There is no experience needed, and guests can meet like-minded people while learning how to keep themselves safe when out exploring, reduce reliance on technology and learn extra skills for camping, kayaking and hiking trips.”
The three-hour group course is led by a head coach at the centre and includes a talk followed by discussion, workshopping and a chance to practise navigation skills in the countryside around the activity centre.
Covered in the course will be activities such compass use, understanding symbols, scales and geography on different OS maps, reading contour lines, learning what it means to get your bearings, orientation and triangulation and how to get yourself 'un-lost'.
The event is on February 18, from 10am to 1pm. Advanced booking is essential.
