A NEW memorial has been installed at Saling Airfield, commemorating the airmen and ground crew of the 309 Polish Squadron.
The commemorative stained-glass window is the first and only permanent memorial to the Ziemia Czerwieska and was commissioned by the family of the first Polish commanding officer of the squadron.
Marta Flavin, granddaughter of Colonel Karol Zygmunt Pistl, and her husband, Shay Flavin, were there on the day to see the memorial unveiled.
The commemorative stained glass window represents the squadron's emblem. It was designed and produced by artist Angi Driver, who was also in attendance for the unveiling.
After the ceremony, a Supermarine Spitfire was flown over by Clive Denny.
The Spitfire is part of Duxford's historic aircraft collection and served with the Polish Squadrons during 1942.
It was reported this was likely to be the first time that a Polish Air Force aircraft landed at Andrewsfield since the station closed at the end of 1945.
A large crowd had gathered at Andrewsfield for the event, who were delighted with the Polish Spitfire's arrival.
Pilot Clive Denny was greeted with a roaring applause as he taxied the aircraft onto the apron by the clubhouse.
