NEW bins have been installed alongside busy roads as part of an ongoing anti-litter campaign.

Braintree Council has put in place new brightly coloured bins along various laybys on the A12, A120 and A131.

The bright colours were chosen in the hopes that they are more noticeable and encourages people to use them more so than dark colours would.

In 2010, as part of the council’s Green Heart of Essex Campaign, roadside litter bins were installed in laybys, and over the years have been put to good use.

However, they were due a replacement due to wear and tear, and this process has now been completed.

The new binds have been match funded by WRAP, Waste and Resources Action Programme, allowing the council to invest £30,000 to give the locations a new look.

The funding has enabled the purchase and installation of 57 new bins.

Council environment boss Wendy Schmitt said: “I have always been disheartened to see litter just thrown by the wayside, blighting our landscapes, and putting wildlife at risk.

“These bright yellow bins will stand out whether it’s day or night, helping to highlight their presence.

"According to the national research, the brighter the bins, the more visible they become and as more people can see them, the more they are likely to use them.

“They certainly cheer up the landscape.”
