HALSTEAD’S MP says plans for a new super prison are “not a done deal” after a public consultation ended.
Public consultation for the 3,400-inmate capacity complex at Wethersfield has ended, with plans moving to the next phase.
A planning application for the two prisons will now be sent to Braintree Council.
Each will be able to hold up to 1,715 prisoners.
MP James Cleverly says he has highlighted his concerns with the Ministry of Justice, which is spearheading the bid.
The primary concerns are over the impact on road infrastructure, with fears Wethersfield’s rural roads will not be able to cope.
However, Mr Cleverly says a transport assessment and travel plan is being conducted to accompany the planning application, which will assess the impact the prisons could have on the roads.
He said: “Planning is an issue which is the remit of local government and not Parliament so it is very important that, if the Ministry of Justice do formally submit their proposal for consideration, you engage with the planning process itself.
“This is the vehicle through which you make your thoughts and comments officially heard.
“I am looking to arrange a meeting with the parish councils to listen to their thoughts about how this matter will affect the local area.
“I can assure you this is not a ‘done deal’ as some have claimed. The process is currently at the pre-application stage and there will be plenty of opportunity to engage and influence any decisions, if and when the MoJ submit their plans to BDC for consideration.”
