A SPECIAL flag is proudly flying outside County Hall ahead of Armed Forces Day on Saturday.
The day of celebration recognises those who make up the armed forces community, from currently serving men and women to service families, veterans and cadets.
It also raises awareness of what support is available locally.
Essex County Council armed forces champion Derrick Louis said: “Armed Forces Day is a day for reflection and recognition.
"I would personally like to say thank you to everyone within the armed forces community for your valuable contribution.
"Having proudly served my country in the British Army for over 30 years both at home and overseas, this day is even more pertinent for me.
“However, we understand that shining a light on our armed forces for one day just isn’t enough.

"That is why we are committed to supporting military families and individuals through both the Essex Armed Forces Community Covenant and the Essex Civil Military Partnership Board, both of which I am proud to be involved with.
“We know one of the biggest issues within the military community is mental health, and I am delighted to announce that in the coming months the covenant will launch the Veterans Mental Health Programme, an online project aimed at raising community awareness of the needs of military personnel, veterans and their families.
“We will continue to work with our partners and the armed forces community to identify concerns and issues and support where we can.”
The Veterans Mental Health Programme can be accessed via the dedicated Facebook page- facebook.com/veteransinessex
Deputy council leader Louise McKinlay said: “Essex has a proud military history and Essex County Council is honoured to join in this celebration.
“We are active supporters of Britain’s servicemen and women, both past and present. Flying this flag is just one way we can show our gratitude on this special day.”
