Vulnerable residents in the district will receive booklets from Braintree Council about how to stay warm during the winter but still save energy.

The Keeping Warm and Healthy in the Braintree District booklets also include details about health and wellbeing and exercise classes, a list of useful contacts and advice on setting a safe temperature for homes.

They are also available from Causeway House and the Braintree District Volunteer Support Agency.

The council is working with Green Deal-accredited firms to address energy efficiency and fuel poverty by promoting and offering support for energy saving improvements, including free and heavily discounted loft and cavity wall insulation.

It has also joined the Essex Energy Switch scheme, encouraging residents to sign up to reduce their energy costs by securing cheaper tariffs on energy bills.

Jo Beavis, cabinet member for people and participation, said: “During the winter months, the safety and wellbeing of some of our most vulnerable residents is of paramount importance. It is vital that people know what the risks are and how to take steps to avoid them.

“We want to make sure that people are informed and aware so that they can look after themselves, their family members, and others in their communities.”
