A landmark water tower which was earmarked for transformation has had its plans rejected.

The disused tower at the Three Counties Crematorium in Halstead Road, High Garrett, could have been extended and converted into a four-storey house with a whole floor devoted to a cinema room.

Braintree Council rejected the plans, submitted by a Mr M Clark, because an extension to the ground floor would be too big and the added storey would make it look out of place in its rural setting.

The water tower has not been used for its original purpose for 50 years, and currently houses telecommunications equipment.
