A drama group will tackle a challenging play for their next production.
She Stoops to Conquer, by Oliver Goldsmith was first performed in Covent Garden in 1773, the play has been adapted several times for television and cinema and now the Sudbury Dramatic Society are taking their turn at performing the classic play.
The show revolves around the Hardcastle family, who are keen to marry their daughter Kate to the wealthy Charles Marlow.
But Marlow suffers from nervousness and becomes tounge-tied in the company of young ladies of his own class, although he finds it easy to speak to those from the “lower classes” such as barmaids and serving wenches.
Kate soon realises that she has to pretend to be a barmaid - stooping to conquer - in order to catch her man.
There are mistaken identities abound and a secret romance before the final conclusion is revealed in this energetic play.
Mike Harding, the play’s director and director of the recent successful SDS production of All My Sons, describes She Stoops to Conquer as a “rollicking caper” featuring an experienced Sudbury Dramatic Society cast, including current artist in residence at The Quay Theatre, Robert Crighton as George Hastings.
She Stoops to Conquer will be performed at the Quay Theatre, in Sudbury from Tuesday until Saturday at 7.45pm.
Tickets are available now from the Box Office on 01787 374745 or online at quaytheatre.org.uk.
